Oscar Trivia #7

Billy Bob Thornton worked as a waiter for an industry event in the 80s and struck up a conversation with director Billy Wilder, who told him he was too ugly to be an actor. He advised him to start a career in screenwriting and to write a script that could make use of his unconventional looks.

Thornton took his advice. In 1996 he wrote, directed and starred in the sleeper hit Sling Blade, which won him the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
