Director Oliver Stone based his Best Picture winner Platoon on his experiences in the Vietnam War, which he might not have had without another Oscar-nominated film, Sands of Iwo Jima.

Stone still held a grudge against the star of the 1949 war epic: "I love John Wayne, but Sands of Iwo Jima sent me to Vietnam believing that it was exciting and I could make a man out of myself. I don't believe John Wayne ever went to war."
