A lot of talk has been going on this week about Gabourey Sidibe, the charming new actress starring in Precious. Lots of debate has gone on about whether or not her talent will outshine her obviously atypical looks (in cinema, anyway) and ensure a successful acting career in coming years. Such a tough call. Most women who look like her are set off to playing the loud mouthed big girl (sort of what Mo'Nique has made a career out of). Michael Clarke Duncan had a breakthrough performance as great as they come but because of his physical appearance can't get much other than ancient warriors and modern thugs. Then again Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti are not your typical hollywood lookers but they've found places for themselves among the elite (though they make some horrible film choices sometimes).
I agree with Univarn, it's a very tough prediction to make. I think we have to consider the fact that she wasn't an actress before she was offered this part. That being said, if this is what she wants to do with her life, I think she could be very successful. She seems like a genuine woman that would be willing to work hard at something if she loves it -- given that she loves acting.
Precious is yet to arrive in Australia, but I've been hearing great things about Sidibe's performance. There's definitely a double standard when it comes to overweight female actors, with bigger males like PS Hoffman doing just fine - even in an action flick like MI3. But regardless, I hope for her own well being and thus the potential longevity of her career, that she slims down to a healthy weight.
Does that sound callous? I certainly don't mean it to.
I hope that she has a good career. An Oscar would certainly help.
